KENS 5 morning show wins big May TV ratings after more than a decade

There is a new early morning newscast king in San Antonio.”KENS 5 Eyewitness News This Morning” is the city’s most-watched morning newscast between  4:30 to 7 a.m., according to the May Nielsen ratings.

Preliminary results show the local CBS station led viewership for those times in total households as well as in the key adults 25-54 demographic to take over from KSAT 12.

This May win in multiple key demographics, including total viewers, is the station’s first since 2009, according to a news release.

“During the last few months, we have given viewers critical updates on the coronavirus response, along with signature segments such as ‘Verify,’ ‘Who’s Hiring’ and ‘Texas Outdoors,’” said Jack Acosta, KENS 5 executive news director. “I couldn’t be prouder of the hard work being done by every single person working the early shift at KENS 5.”

The morning newscast, helmed by veteran anchors Sarah Forgany, Barry Davis, Audrey Castoreno and meteorologist Paul Mireles, has seen significant growth over the past several months, culminating in the May win. In February, KENS 5 took first place among adults between the ages of 25-54 from 4:30 to 6 a.m.

That wasn’t the only good news for the station. KENS 5 saw significant viewership growth in its 5 p.m., 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. newscasts compared to May 2019.

“We are honored that San Antonio continues to trust KENS 5, making us No. 1 among morning viewers,” said Tom Cury, KENS 5 president and general manager. “We have seen continued growth for all of our newscasts since 2019. And in May, no other station in San Antonio grew as much as KENS 5.”

According to KSAT12 rating numbers, the ABC affiliate remains No. 1  for its 5 p.m., 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. newscasts.

WOAI-TV had significant gains in May in the key demos, a ratings report released by the Sinclair-owned station shows. The 5 p.m. newscast was up 7 percent in adults 25-54 and its viewership rose 19 percent among females 25-54.  The 6.p.m. newscast saw an increase of 23 percent in adults 25-54 and was up 27 percent in females 25-54. The 10 p.m. newscast was up 24 percent in adults 25-54 and 21 percent in females 25-54.

Fox affiliate KABB’s 9 p.m. newscast saw a 92 percent increase in adults 25-54 in reaching a 2.3 ratings and a 100 percent increase to reach a 2.4 rating among females 25-54.

KABB is No. 1 in the 9 p.m. time slot and tied for No. 2 with KENS for late-night news the in key demo for a 2.3 rating.

WOAI-TV’s 10 p.m. had a good month, bringing in adults 25-54 for a 2.1 rating.

“We have been focusing first and foremost on the viewers and they’ve responded in kind with their loyalty in viewership. We are focused on protecting our audience’s family, health, money and property on both stations,” said WOAI-TV/KABB news director Mandi Mendoza. “You see that on Fox San Antonio with ‘Cash For Kindness,’ ‘On The Run,’ ‘Marshal’s Most Wanted,’ ‘Yami Investigates,’ ‘SA Strong’ and ‘SA Proud.’ Our segments on WOAI like ‘Show Me Your Bill,’ ‘Trouble Shooters Investigate,’ and our 4 Zone Forecast were built to give a voice and alert all of our viewers.”

“Good Morning San Antonio” at 9 a.m., “KSAT News at Noon” and “SA Live” all held the No. 1 spots in their respective time slots.

“Once San Antonio wakes up, their choice is very clear: KSAT12!  San Antonians tune in to KSAT 12 and stay all day and into the night as KSAT 12 News is No. 1 from 6 a.m. until 11 p.m,” said KSAT creative services director David Cuccio.
